Samael was an Ancient Archangel of the Lord who fell and became commonly mistaken as Death and the Devil, but Abaddon confirmed that he was one of the original ruling Fallen Angels in Hell known as the "Father of Demons" and "King of the Wicked", following Lucifer being sealed away the other "Princes of Hell" took turns ruling Demonkind but too were sealed away one by one.

Samael is one of the Holy Twins of God that had the capacity to rule all of Heaven and Earth if given the chance, Samael believed himself to be the only surviving member of the twins and sought to take control of Hell and kill Crowley and Metatron both so that he would be uncontested from bringing Hell to Earth.

His goals seemed to have diverged, when he gained information from a mortally wounded Metatron about a method of resurrecting Orphan, his fraternal twin brother and lover.
